The pain of supply chain disruptions can affect any company. However, when the delayed parts are central to the product itself, that pain becomes critical. Finding a closer, more responsive manufacturing partner can make all the difference.
Overseas supply chain delays threatened to derail a critical growth opportunity for startup company Pluie. The team turned to Profile Plastics to manufacture their signature plastic component on an accelerated timeline. Profile’s ability to fast-track a complex thermoforming project ultimately kept Pluie on course.
Challenge: How to beat plastic parts delays without slowing growth?
Launched in 2020, Pluie offers the first and only self-sanitizing baby-changing table designed for public restrooms. The company’s mission is to revolutionize changing tables by providing a cleaner, safer, and more convenient alternative for parents and caregivers.
Early traction and market validation were essential for the young startup. Pluie was riding a wave of early momentum.
The company was less than two months away from several scheduled installations, including a Major League Baseball team. Satisfying these high-profile customers would generate positive media coverage, strengthen customer relationships, and reassure investors who watched performance closely.
Pluie suddenly found itself facing several problems
An overseas supplier notified the Pluie team that a key plastic component would arrive six weeks late. The delay had several converging factors, including material shortages, the timing of the Lunar New Year holiday, and labor disruptions tied to COVID-19.
Quality concerns with the signature table part heightened the urgency. Sample parts that had already been delivered showed warping and denting.
“This wasn’t just any part,” explained Pluie founder and CEO Addie Gundry. “It’s the main Pluie piece. It’s what you see when you walk into a restroom, so the aesthetic is crucial.”
A delay at this stage would potentially cause missing the opportunity for positive exposure. Blowing deadlines was not an option. “No excuses were going to remedy the detrimental effects if we couldn’t execute,” added Pluie co-founder and COO, Brittany Hizer.
As installation dates loomed and confidence in the overseas supplier eroded, Pluie pivoted to the possibility of a U.S.-based alternative thermoformer. That’s when they reached out to Profile Plastics.
Solution: How expertise, experience, and seamless processes expedite critical production
Following initial contact, Profile invited Addie and Brittany to the plant, quickly got up to speed on their project needs. The thermoformer set up a clear, achievable path forward to produce the parts they so desperately needed.
From the outset, the focus was on responsiveness, transparency, and problem-solving. Profile swiftly and methodically guided Pluie through a series of steps to address both urgency and quality. Several key capabilities proved especially valuable.
Leveraging a deep network of trusted vendors
Material for a baby product installed in public restrooms requires specific characteristics to meet strict performance and safety standards. Pluie’s needs ranged from a 5VA fire rating to a precise shade of white at a certain gloss level with a durable printed logo that would not peel over time.
Grasping the urgency, Profile leveraged long-standing supplier relationships to ensure the right materials would be available for a fast-tracked project. Good connections with exceptional vendors built over decades can be critical to a project’s success.
Handling this complexity behind the scenes created a process that felt seamless for the customer despite the compressed timeline.
Maintaining clarity and transparency about scheduling
Trust in the original supplier was already strained when Pluie contacted Profile. Revised schedules felt uncertain. Chances that delays would grow caused concern. The company needed a realistic, well-organized plan.
Profile addressed the questions directly. Open discussions covered timing, constraints, and expectations. Profile outlined a structured production plan and clearly communicated what was achievable. That level of transparency helped rebuild the customer’s confidence.
Using quick-turn prototype tooling to control speed and cost
Without access to the original production tooling, Profile had to find other options to speed up the manufacturing process while controlling costs. Quick-turn prototype tooling allowed manufacturing to begin rapidly.
In addition, Profile opted to fabricate and trim another component, eliminating the need for tooling or thermoforming at all. That kind of insightful solution added significant value, saving additional money and time.
Eliminating quality issues to deliver a premium-finish part
The aesthetics for such a high-visibility part had to be attractive and flawless. Profile’s specialized experience in thermoforming highly cosmetic parts proved essential. The warping and denting problems seen with the previous supplier’s parts were eliminated.
“Profile definitely delivered on what we wanted to see,” Addie said. “They produced a beautiful part. We even loved their version of white better than what we were originally using.”
Results: Delivering quality parts in just 7 weeks establishes a strong partnership
With the parts completed and delivered on schedule, Pluie was successfully able to move forward with the crucial second-quarter deployments. The finished parts exceeded expectations. The company highlighted several key outcomes from collaborating with Profile.
Critical time savings
While Profile worked aggressively to hit the accelerated schedule, the overseas supplier ultimately fell even further behind. Essentially, Profile accomplished in seven weeks what had originally taken nearly six months. That time savings was compounded by the improved quality of the finished parts.
The Profile team was essentially able to do in seven weeks what took around six months with the overseas supplier. And that’s not even including the better quality of the Profile parts.
Maintained momentum during a defining moment
The ability to complete high-profile installations on time had a cascading positive effect at a critical stage in the young company’s growth. The experience reinforced confidence that the company could navigate challenges without losing speed.
“We told Profile they pulled off a miracle for us,” commented Brittany. “We needed those parts as soon as possible, and people told us we were crazy. But Profile understood the bind we were in and ultimately came through for us. That’s enabled us to stay on track and continue to scale.”
Added value through local manufacturing
Companies often opt for overseas supply chains to gain perceived schedule or cost advantages. In this case, however, the benefits didn’t materialize. Working with a local thermoformer offered tangible advantages, including face-to-face collaboration, shorter lead times, simplified logistics, and reduced shipping costs.
Proximity played a part. Having Profile nearby made the communications process easier and contributed to the project’s success.
A foundation for long-term partnership
The baby-changing table uses 86 individual parts sourced from numerous suppliers. Even in that complex ecosystem, Profile stood out. The thermoforming engineering team offered thoughtful feedback on design improvements and cost-reduction opportunities.
The result was a component that aligned with the brand’s emphasis on cleanliness, quality, and thoughtful design. Based on their experience, Pluie is confident that it can again turn to Profile for future support on several fronts.
